Jaffna Municipal Council meeting disrupted over LTTE Heroes Day commemoration

Proceedings of the Jaffna Municipal Council were brought to an abrupt halt on November 5 following heated opposition from several councillors over plans to prepare an agenda for an LTTE “Heroes Day” commemoration.
Four councillors reportedly walked out of the meeting amid shouting as tensions escalated inside the council chamber.
The dispute began when several members questioned what action the Municipal Council intended to take over the statue of Thileepan that had earlier been removed from the Kopay area in Jaffna.
The situation became heated after answers to those questions were reportedly not provided and an attempt was instead made to discuss arrangements for the LTTE Heroes Day commemoration.
Further arguments followed as councillors expressed opposing views on the issue, eventually forcing proceedings to be suspended.
Meanwhile, discussions have also taken place outside the council on holding an LTTE Heroes Day commemoration in Jaffna on November 27.
