Samagi Jana Balawegaya Parliamentarian Manusha Nanayakkara yesterday filed a Fundamental Rights petition in the Supreme Court seeking a declaration that the appointment of former State Minister Ajith Nivard Cabral as the Governor of the Central Bank by thePresident has no legal effect.

The petitioner has cited Foreign Minister Basil Rajapaksa, newly appointed Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabral, Monitory Board of Central Bank, Secretary to the President P.B. Jayasundara and Attorney General as respondents.

The Petitioner states that Cabral had been appointed with a view to further the political agenda of the ruling political party and thus done mala fide with collateral purposes and not made on the national interests and the interests of the public at large.

The Petitioner further stated that by the manner in which Ajith Nivard Cabral has functioned during his previous tenure, he has proven that he lacks competency, integrity and responsibility that is necessary to hold the office of the Governor of CBSL.
