Nine Iranians face life imprisonment for drug trafficking

The Colombo High Court today imposed life imprisonment on nine Iranians after they pleaded guilty to possessing and trafficking 84 kilogrammes of heroin.
Colombo High Court Judge Amal Ranaraja imposed life imprisonment on the nine Iranians for trafficking heroin within the territory of Sri Lanka on the high seas off Akurala.
The nine convicts were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy off Akurala on February 24, 2019.
During the raid, the Sri Lanka Navy recovered around 100 kg of heroin in the multi-day fishing trawler with the Iranian crew.
The recovered heroin was sent to the government analyst for examination and a report.
The government analyst's report confirmed that there was heroin in the packages of around 84 kilogrammes.
