A request made by the police to remove the obstructions caused to the access road of the Presidential Secretariat owing to the GotaGoHome protest has been referred to the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court.
Colombo Additional Magistrate Shalani Perera referred this application to the Colombo Chief Magistrate. The Chief Magistrate is likely to hear the case on May 10.
The Additional Magistrate made this order consequent to a request made by Fort Police through the Attorney General’s Department.
Meanwhile, Colombo Additional Magistrate Harshana Kekunawala today decided to refrain from hearing the magisterial inquiry relating to the protest at Galle Face green.
State Counsel Shavindra Wickrema appearing for the Fort Police, told the court that he is ready to make an application regarding the obstructions caused by protesters opposite the Presidential Secretariat.
A group of lawyers, including President’s Counsel Saliya Pieris and Upul Jayasuriya PC appearing for an individual engaged in the protest, raised objections against the prosecution’s request. The lawyers requested the Magistrate to allow them to peruse the video footage presented to the court by the police.
Having considered the facts, Additional Magistrate Shalini Perera fixed the case for May 10. The matter is likely to come up before the Colombo Chief Magistrate.
