Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa will make a special political announcement when Parliament meets on Wednesday. Speculation is rife that he would tender his resignation as the Prime Minister following the announcement. The Eleven party representatives and the independent groups in Parliament met with the President today to discuss the modalities of the new governing structure. The parties agreed to call it a National Consues Government instead of an interim government.
Basil Rajapaksa, who was present at the meeting, has asserted that the SLPP must play a dominant role in whatever the government comes into office. Meanwhile, Parliament is likely to elect a Deputy Speaker when it meets on Wednesday to replace Ranjith Siyamabalapitya, who had resigned. Two names have already come to the limelight, including Dilan Perera from the SLPP and Sudharshini Fernandopulle from the opposition.
