A prisoner on death row who escaped dressed in a prison guard's uniform was re-arrested

The Prisons Department said that a prisoner who was sentenced to death for murder escaped from Welikada Prison yesterday and was re-arrested. He escaped wearing the uniform of a Welikada prison guard and was arrested while he had boarded a train at Maradana Railway Station.

When this prisoner was taken out of the cell for a religious programme from where he was detained at around 09.30 a.m. yesterday (25), he escaped from the premises dressed in a uniform similar to that of a prison guard that he had concealed. The prisoner escaped from the main gate of Welikada prison, according to Prisons Media Spokesman Additional Commissioner General Chandana Ekanayake.
