The writ petition filed by Gampaha District Parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake, claiming his rights to function as a Parliamentarian was today dismissed by Court of Appeal.

Accordingly, Court of Appeal (President) Justice Arjuna Obeysekera and Justice Mayadunne Corearefused to issue notices on the respondents citing there is no legal basis to proceed with the application.

On January 11, the Supreme Court convicted RanjanRamanayake for the offence of contempt of court and sentenced him to a term of four years of rigorous imprisonment.

Filing this petition though through his lawyers, Ramanayake sought an order restraining Secretary General of Parliament from taking any steps to inform the Election Commission that he has vacated his seat as a Member of Parliament.
