President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has invited the Former Prime Minister and UNPleader Ranil Wickremesinghe to be the Prime minister of the interim government.
Mr Wickrmemsinghe has had at least three rounds of talks with the President, the last of which being on Wednesday evening.
Several SLPP members have expressed their willingness to work with Wickremesinghe.
SJB front liner Harin Fernando has left the party to be an independent member. Fernando may join his former leader Ranil Wickremesinghe at some point in time to support the interim administration.
Earlier, opposition leader Sajith Premadasa was to form the government, but he demanded the resignation of the President. However, Premadasa later softened his stand as it was the duty of the opposition as the alternative government to salvage the country from further deterioration. But it is more likely that Wickremesinghe will take over as the interim Prime Minister. iThe incumbent Prime minister, Mahinda Rajapaksa, came under pressure to resign following unrelenting agitation by the protestors.
Meanwhile, the SLFP has resolved to support Sajith Premadasa for the Premier stakes if he was willing to be the Prime Minister. Later in the day, they had sent a list of three names to the President to pick one of the most eligible contenders they are Dullas Allahapperuma. Nimal Sirpala De Silva and Wijedasa Rajapaksa.
