After nearly one year of assuming duties as the Executive President of Sri Lanka, , President Ranil Wickremesinghe will make a thirty-hour official visit to India on the 20th of July. The president will arrive on the eve of July 20th in New Delhi and depart the following day after discussions with the Indian hierarchy. For a long time, India delayed an invitation to its closest neighbour on the southern seafront.
Mr Wickrkemesinghe was elected by Parliament as the President to succeed the ousted President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who decided to quit after massive street protests launched by the people due to shortages in essential items and longer power cuts imposed by the previous administration.
Wickremsinghe however managed to supply continuous power follwing a massive tariff hike. He is expected to reduce it by a small percentage at the beginning of July.
India helped Sri Lanka overcome a serious economic crisis by providing US$4 billion to cushion the effects of the catastrophic economic crisis.
