Former Parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake was released today from the Welikada prison after President Ranil Wickremesinghe signed papers granting the former MP a Presidential Pardon. A large crowd, including opposition leader Sajith Premadasa, was present at the Welikada prison to receive him. After he was released, he accompanied Sajith Premadasa in his car.

Ranjan was imprisoned for four years of rigorous imprisonment by the Supreme Court after he was found guilty of contempt of court.

He was indicted by the Attorney General after he made allegedly derogatory remarks about the judiciary.

Yesterday, Ranjan Ramanayke filed papers in the Supreme Court tendering an unqualified apology.
