Sri Lanka Police has requested the general public to refrain from promoting fake news on social media
Police said people should also refrain from assisting in dissemination of fake news.
Police who described it as an offence said such offenders would be arrested without a warrant since it could disturb the law and order situation of the country.
Meanwhile, Minister Sarath Weerasekara told Parliament those who indulge in such activity would be brought before the law.
Explaining his stance on the allegation that he directed a bus carrying people under the quarantine law to return, the minister denied the allegation and said that he only facilitated them to have their clothes to spend 14 days at a quarantine centre.
Police also said that there was no move to obstruct the freedom of expression but would act against fake news that would incite people and communities against each other.
