Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has appealed to citizens to reject those who seek communal disharmony.
In a tweet on Wednesday, he said: “This is the time for all Sri Lankans to join hands as one, to overcome the economic, social and political challenges. I urge all Sri Lankans to reject the subversive attempts to push you towards racial and religious disharmony. Promoting moderation, toleration & coexistence is vital.”
There were attempts on Tuesday to create conflict between Muslims and Christians in Negombo but it was diffused by Muslim and Catholic religious leaders.
