Justice Minister Ali Sabry told Parliament yesterday that he would seek advice from the Prime Minister to rectify the unlawful removal of one time Chief Justice Mohan Peiris from his position.
Mohan Peris was appointed Chief Justice following the impeachment of Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake, after an inquiry by a Parliamentary Select Committee, amidst vehement opposition by the members of the legal profession.
Soon after the “Yahapalanaya” government took office, Shirani Bandranayaka was restored in the substantive position as the Chief justice, on the ground that proper procedure and the Latimer House principles were not followed by the then government. However, after a short stint, Chief Justice Bandaranayke retired from the position.
Minister Sabry made the observations on the former Chief Justice Pereis responding to a query raised by ruling party Parliamentarian Pramithe Bandara Tennekoon
