The Sri Lanka Army today deployed more than 600 personnel for flood relief activities in the Matara district, the Defence Ministry said.
The Ministry said that there was a risk of breaking the stone embankment that was built under the ‘Nilwala’ project in Atthudawa, Matara, to prevent floods in Matara town due to the bad inclement weather conditions affecting the country.
“More than 100 soldiers from the 61st Brigade of the Sri Lanka Army were deployed last night to fortify the embankment, the Defence Ministry statement said.
More than 2500 families in the Malimbada,
Akurassa, Kamburupitiya, Thihagoda, Atthuduwa, Matara Fort, and Gal Bamma in the Matara district have been displaced due to the inclement weather conditions and the
Lanka Army, Navy, and disaster relief teams are working to provide immediate assistance to
them under the supervision of the Army Commander.
