The Supreme Court today concluded the arguments put forward in support of and against the proposed 22nd Amendment to the Constitution.
Accordingly, all parties relating to the petitions were directed to submit their written submissions regarding these special determination petitions.
Later on, the Supreme Court’s determination over the proposed constitutional amendment bill is to be communicated to the Speaker.
A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court, comprising Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, Justice Buwaneka, and Justice Arjuna Obeysekera, heard the arguments.
Nine petitioners, including Dr. Gunadasa Amarasekara, Attorney-at-law Nagananda, Attorney-at-law Nuwan Bellanthudawa and retired army officer Anil Sumedha Amarasekara, filed these petitions naming the Attorney General as respondent. The petitioners are seeking a declaration that the bill, in whole or in part, thereby requires the approval of the people at a referendum and requires a two-thirds majority in Parliament.
