• Teacher unions reject government proposal
A special committee will be appointed to implement the Cabinet Sub Committee recommendations on the salary discrepancies of the Principal and teacher categories.
Minister of Education Dinesh Gunawardene promised to implement the recommendations within six months.
He also said that the Cabinet yesterday approved a special allowance of Rs 5000 for the teachers until they sort out discrepancies through the next Budget. He said that he hopes the teachers would resume their usual duties of teaching the children online.
The Cabinet has already decided to implement the recommendations of the Cabinet Sub Committee appointed for the purpose. A gazette notification will be issued declaring the Instructor and the Principal Service a closed service in November.
However, teacher unions have rejected the government move demanding immediate relief.
