TIN mandatory for several transactions from today

Providing a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) has become mandatory from today (02) for a range of banking, financial and administrative transactions, the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) said.
IRD Spokesman Nandana Kumara said a TIN must now be provided when opening a bank account at a commercial bank or financial institution, registering a motor vehicle, renewing a vehicle licence, obtaining approval for building plans, registering land or a business, and transferring shares.
Individuals who have not yet obtained a TIN can apply through the Inland Revenue Department website at ird.gov.lk.
The application form is available under the E-Services section of the website.
Applicants are required to complete the online form and submit it together with a scanned copy of their National Identity Card.
Once the application has been processed, the TIN will be sent to the applicant’s email address, the department said.
