A delegation from India led by Foreign Secretary Shri Vinay Kwatra met with President Gotabaya Rajapaksa this morning. The delegation is currently meeting with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. Meanwhile High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to India Milinda Moragoda briefed European heads of mission on the current economic and political developments in Sri Lanka at his official residence in New Delhi earlier this week.
During the meeting, he outlined Sri Lanka’s plans for the stabilization and recovery of the country’s economy. He stressed the importance of bridging finance until the IMF programme is in place and requested their assistance in the recovery process.
The briefing was attended by 14 ambassadors and one high commissioner from Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Ireland, Luxembourg, North Macedonia, Portugal, Serbia, Slovenia, Ukraine and Malta. It was a part of Sri Lanka’s ongoing engagement with the 94 countries concurrently accredited to Sri Lanka from New Delhi.
The High Commissioner also had meeting with Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman and External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar to discuss how Indian assistance can stabilize the Sri Lankan economy and help it to recover.
