Women protestors clashed with the Police when the latter intervened to stop a protest march organized by the “Free Women” movement.

The Police barred them from entering the high-security zone close to the Presidential secretariat this afternoon.

The “Free Women” movement started their protest march to mark International Women’s day from Maradana calling for gender equality and to win over women’s rights.

As the march entered the roundabout close to the Presidential secretariat through the Lotus Road the Police intervened to stop the march that ensued a clash between the Police and the marching women.

The organisers alleged that elderly women who were demonstrating were assaulted and forcibly removed by the Police as they were protesting to secure their legitimate rights. The incident took place on International Women’s Day

The organisers said the objective of the protest march was to bring to limelight the grievances of the working women and to protect their rights against exploitation. They alleged that the rights of the women who are working in Middle Eastern countries, garment factories and in the estate sector had been denied over the years and the protest march served as a grim reminder to the authorities of their plight.
