Lanka plans new insurance scheme for mushroom cultivation

The Agricultural and Agrarian Insurance Board plans to introduce a new insurance scheme for mushroom cultivation, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation said.
Under the proposed scheme, farmers will pay a premium of about 2,025 Sri Lankan rupees to insure a mushroom house containing 250 cultivation bags for three months.
The scheme will provide compensation of 22,500 rupees if an established mushroom cultivation site suffers damage from diseases or pest infestations.
Farmers who cultivate mushrooms in line with recommendations issued by the Department of Agriculture will be eligible for the insurance coverage.
The program aims to protect mushroom growers from unexpected crop losses and encourage more farmers to enter the industry.
The Agricultural and Agrarian Insurance Board, which operates under the agriculture ministry, will implement the scheme.
