10 injured after wild elephant attacks bus on Kataragama-Buttala road

Around 10 people were injured after a wild elephant attacked a private bus on the Kataragama-Buttala road, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and overturn on Thursday (3).

The accident occurred at around 11.00 a.m. near the electric fence checkpoint within the Kataragama Police Division.

The bus was carrying a group of pilgrims from Chilaw to Kataragama and was travelling along the Buttala-Kataragama road when it was attacked by a wild elephant standing on the roadway.

Following the attack, the bus left the road and overturned.

Around 40 people were reportedly travelling in the bus at the time of the accident.

Approximately 10 injured passengers were admitted to Kataragama Hospital for treatment.

The injuries were not believed to be serious.
