Incumbent President Sirisena and former President Rajapaksa were arch-rivals until just a few months ago, when a cooling of hostilities became apparent. Rajapaksa was sworn in as the new Prime Minister by President Sirisena in a surprise move on October 26th.

One of the rare occasions Maithripala Sirisena and Ranil Wickremesinghe participated together as President and Prime Minister was at an event to light up Mihintale to celebrate the Poson festival in June this year. Their Yahapalanaya came to an abrupt halt on October 26th, when the former sacked the latter and plunged the country into a constitutional crisis.

In the run-up to the 2015 Presidential polls Sirisena appealed for votes stating that a defeat would see him six feet under. He has now handed over government to those from whom he feared for his life only three years ago, accusing the UNP of plotting his assassination.
