The Attorney General had filed two separate indictments in the High Court against former Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka over a hit-and-run accident that took place in 2016 at Rajagiriya

The charges on the indictment were read out today to former Minister Megapolis and Western Province Development Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka before the Colombo High Court

In the first indictment, MP Patali Champika has been charged for causing grievous injury to a youth named Sandeep Sampath while recklessly driving a vehicle.

However, defence counsel appearing on behalf of Champika Ranawaka informed the court that they are expecting to raise preliminary objections challenging the maintainability of the charges filed against his client by the Attorney General.

Taking into consideration the facts, Colombo High Court Judge Namal Balalle fixed the case for inquiry relating to preliminary objections on April 27.

The second indictment comprising 16 charges has been filed against Patali Champika, his driver Thusith Dilum Kumara and former officer In Charge (OIC) of the Welikada Police Station, Assistant Superintendent of Police Sudath Asmadala on charges of fabricating false evidence, the conspiracy of fabricating evidence and submitting false reports to the Court.
