The Department of Meteorology has issued an Amber-level advisory for severe lightning in several parts of the country, warning of thundershowers accompanied by lightning in 22 districts after 1 p.m. Friday (6).

The Department warned that the conditions could pose a serious risk to public safety, particularly for people engaged in outdoor activities.

Thunderstorms may also bring strong winds and heavy rainfall, potentially causing localised damage to infrastructure and disrupting transport and electricity and communication services. Electrical and electronic equipment could also be damaged.

The public has been advised to suspend or postpone outdoor sports, construction, agricultural and recreational activities when thunderstorms are approaching.

People outdoors during thunderstorms should immediately seek shelter in substantial buildings or enclosed, hard-topped vehicles. They have also been advised to avoid beaches, swimming areas, lakes, rivers and other water bodies.

The Department warned against taking shelter under isolated trees, tents, open sheds or partially enclosed structures.

People should also stay away from electrical appliances, plumbing and wired electrical systems during thunderstorms.

Outdoor events should be cancelled or moved indoors, while children and other vulnerable persons should be kept indoors until the threat has passed.
