The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has appointed a committee to study and make recommendations to the BASL in respect of the Colombo Port City Economic Commission Bill.

The Colombo Port City Economic Commission Bill was presented to Parliament on April 8 following the cabinet approval.

Secretary to the BASL, Rajeev Amarasuriya, said that this committee will be chaired by President’s Counsel Ikram Mohamed.

Other committee members are;  UdithaEgalahewa PC, Chandaka Jayasundera PC, Attorney-at-Law Eraj de Silva, Attorney-at-Law

Manjuka Fernandopulle and Attorney-at-Law Dhanya Gunewardena. Attorney-at-Law ShivanCooray and Attorney-at-Law Yoshani Demuniwill function as the co-conveners of the committee.

The government has already gazetted the bill titled Colombo Port City Economic Commission to establish a Special Economic Zone within which there is the ease of doing business that will attract new investments.

This Bill will establish a Commission to grant registrations, licenses, authorizations and other approvals to carry on businesses and other activities in the Zone. The Commission will consist of not less than five members and not more than seven members who will be appointed by the President.
