BASL to discuss response to proposed increase in judges’ retirement age

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka will hold a special general meeting in Colombo on Wednesday (29) to discuss the Government’s proposal to increase the retirement age of judges and decide what action it should take.
BASL President Rajeev Amarasuriya said the meeting would begin at 11 a.m. at the association’s premises.
He said the issue did not concern any particular judge or individual, but raised questions about judicial independence, constitutional principles and public confidence in the justice system.
Amarasuriya said any fundamental constitutional change should be introduced through a transparent process involving broad consultation with the public and relevant stakeholders.
The BASL has invited its members to attend the meeting and discuss what it described as an issue of national importance.
