China to deploy meteorological early-warning system in Sri Lanka

China will deploy its “Mazu” intelligent meteorological early-warning system in Sri Lanka to strengthen disaster preparedness and climate resilience, Chinese Ambassador Wei Huaxiang said in Colombo on Wednesday.

Wei said the system would support Sri Lanka in addressing climate change and improving its capacity for disaster prevention and mitigation.

The ambassador made the remarks at a reception marking the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

Wei said China had built the world’s largest and fastest-growing renewable energy system, with total installed power generation capacity exceeding 4 billion kilowatts. Renewable energy accounts for 61 percent of the country’s total installed capacity, he said.

He added that Chinese technologies in solar power, wind power and energy storage were increasingly supporting energy transitions in other countries.

Wei also highlighted ongoing China-Sri Lanka cooperation in areas including infrastructure, water technology, education and livelihood assistance.

China has provided school uniform materials to Sri Lanka for four consecutive years, benefiting more than 4.4 million students, he said.

The ambassador said China and Sri Lanka would mark the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 75th anniversary of the Rubber-Rice Pact next year.
