CJ nominates fuller bench to determine the constitutionality of the Colombo Port City Economic Commission Bill

The Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya has nominated a fuller bench comprising five judges of the Supreme Court to hear the Special Determination petitions filed challenging the constitutionality of the Colombo Port City Economic Commission Bill.  

Accordingly, these petitions will be heard before a five-judge-bench comprising Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, Justices Buwaneka Aluwihare, Justice Priyantha Jayawardena, Justice Murdu Fernando and Justice Janak de Silva on April 19.

Several petitions have been filed so far against the Colombo Port City Economic Commission Bill. The petitioners are; President of BASL Saliya Pieris PC, BASL Secretary Rajiv Amarasuriya, Chairman of the United National Party Vajira Abeywardena and UNP General Secretary, Palitha Range Bandara, Oshala Herath, Dr Ajantha Perera, Jeran Jagatheesan who contested the 2020 General Election under the UNP ticket and engineer Kapila Renuka Perera.

The petitioners are seeking a declaration that the bill as a whole or in part requires the approval by people at a referendum and requires a two-thirds majority in Parliament.
