Senior Journalist and Editor Elmo Gunaratne passed away this morning due to Covid. He was 89. Mr Gunaratne, a past student of the Ananda College, started his career as a journalist in the Sinhalaya newspaper and later joined the Lake House. In 1973, Mr Gunaratne and a few others left the Lake House protesting against the takeover by the then government. Then he proceeded to Bangkok and worked at Bangkok Post newspaper as its Deputy Chief Editor. In 1978 he was back in Sri Lanka to join the then Times group as its Managing Editor and became the Editor-in-Chief of all three newspapers published by the Times of Ceylon, The Sunday Times, Daily Mirror and Lankadeepa. Mr Gunaratne succumbed to the Covid infection while receiving treatment at his residence in Colombo. He was the father of Senior Journalist and Editor Thushara Gunaratne.
