Dengue cases near 90,000; deaths hit 65

Dengue cases have surged to 89,395 this year, with the latest figures released by the National Dengue Control Unit on Sunday (9) showing a continued rise in infections.
The number of dengue-related deaths has also increased to 65, according to data recorded up to Saturday (8).
The Western Province accounts for more than half of the cases reported so far, with 47,310 infections, representing 52.92% of the national total.
Gampaha remains the worst-affected district, recording 19,007 cases as of yesterday, while Colombo has reported 17,725 cases.
Kandy ranks third with 6,341 cases.
July recorded the highest monthly number of dengue cases this year, with 29,973 infections reported during the month.
The outbreak has continued into August, with 4,048 cases already recorded during the first eight days of the month.
The latest figures highlight the continuing public health concern posed by the spread of dengue, with the national caseload now approaching the 90,000 mark.
