Eight meet records set at Western Province Schools Sports Festival

Eight meet records were set during the first two days of the Western Province Schools Sports Festival at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium in Diyagama.
Gateway International School Rajagiriya athletes Ashen Thewarapperuma and Ranuki Vonara were among the standout performers on Tuesday.
Thewarapperuma won the under-20 boys’ 200 metres in 22.25 seconds to set a new meet record, while Vonara established a new mark in the under-20 girls’ discus throw with 34.37 metres.
Isitha Wickramarachchi of Nalanda College set a record of 64.66m in the under-20 boys’ javelin, while V. Siyapath of Ananda College clocked 8.59 seconds in the under-12 boys’ 60m.
Other records came from Vimeth Nethmira, Sayuru Himansa, Denuki Himaya and Methuka Malhiru.
W.D. Kaushalya of Horana Thakshila equalled the under-20 girls’ long jump record with 5.77m.
The top three athletes in each event will qualify for the All Island Schools Sports Festival.
