Former IGP C.D. Wickramaratne found dead in suspected suicide

Former Inspector General of Police C.D. Wickramaratne has been found dead at his residence in Athurugiriya in a suspected suicide.
He is believed to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot injury. Police have begun investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Wickramaratne served in the Sri Lanka Police for more than 30 years and became the country’s 35th Inspector General of Police.
Before his appointment as IGP, he served as the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Southern Province.
He was appointed Acting Inspector General of Police after then-IGP Pujith Jayasundara was sent on compulsory leave following the Easter Sunday bomb attacks.
Wickramaratne was confirmed as Inspector General of Police on 25 November 2020 and remained in the post until his retirement on 25 November 2023.
