Gary Anandasangaree, a Sri Lankan-born Tamil, has recently been appointed as a Cabinet Minister in the Canadian Government. This appointment comes as part of a reshuffle in which seven new Members of Parliament (MPs) were promoted to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Cabinet. Anandasangaree, who is the son of Veerasingham Anandasangaree, a former MP and the leader of the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF), was elected as the MP for Scarborough-Rouge Park in Toronto in 2015.

Anandasangaree was officially sworn in as the Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, taking over the position from Marc Miller. Before this appointment, he served as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister, as well as the Justice and Heritage Ministers.

Born in Sri Lanka, Anandasangaree immigrated to Canada with his mother in 1983. He holds degrees from Carleton University in Ottawa and Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto.
