July 19, 2021

There was a heated exchange of words between the government benches and the opposition benches when the No-confidence Motion (NCM) against Minister Udaya Gammnapila, presented in the House by the SJB.
The government was of the opinion that it was not properly formulated by the opposition benches. However, MP S.M Marikkar NCM continued his speech regardless of objections by the government.
At this juncture, UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe moved an amendment to the NCM presented by the opposition benches, but the Leader of the House rejected the amendment by the UNP.
At this stage, S.M Marikkar attempted to present the NCM afresh, Ministers Wimal Weerawansa and Prassana Ranatunge opposed it vehemently.
Though the Speaker moved to allow the Opposition to present the NCM afresh, there was much opposition from the government. Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa intervened at this stage and said since the government is prepared to debate the NCM and wanted the opposition to present NCM. Thereafter, S.M Marikkar presented the same to the House.
