Historic Bogambara Prison revived

The government has decided to re-establish the historic Bogambara Prison premises in Kandy, which was previously decommissioned during the tenure of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The Bogambara Prison complex, spanning 14 acres, is set to be rehabilitated and restored for use as a correctional facility once again. Public opinion suggests that the decision to restore the existing structures for prison use could significantly help alleviate the current overcrowding issues faced by other prisons across the country.
The facility is capable of housing over 2,000 inmates and possesses adequate water supply and infrastructure facilities. At present, the prison premises are under the purview of the Urban Development Authority (UDA).
