Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) MP Shanakiyan Rasamanickam has questioned how the Colombo Port City Economic Commission has operated for nearly two years without a Legal Director.

Raising the issue in Parliament on Friday, Rasamanickam said the prolonged vacancy was concerning given the Commission’s extensive legal and regulatory responsibilities.

He asked what mechanisms had been used to ensure that decisions taken by the Commission were legally sound in the absence of an official responsible for legal oversight.

Rasamanickam also raised concerns over the disclosure of remuneration paid to Commission officials.

He said he had requested salary details for individual officials but had instead received only the Commission’s total salary expenditure.

According to Rasamanickam, the lack of individual salary disclosures, together with the prolonged Legal Director vacancy, raised broader questions about transparency and accountability.

He called on the Government to explain what alternative arrangements had been made to provide legal oversight and how the Commission had continued to perform its functions during the period.
