Lanka wilts under dry spell as temperatures soar to 45°C

Sri Lanka is facing a worsening dry spell, with temperatures forecast to climb as high as 45°C in several districts and communities in some areas struggling with severe water shortages.

The Department of Meteorology has warned that temperatures could reach between 39°C and 45°C in several parts of the country, urging the public to take precautions against the prevailing heat.

The prolonged lack of rain has particularly affected Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Monaragala, while parts of Jaffna, Ampara and Hambantota are also experiencing drought conditions.

Officials said some areas had gone without rain for nearly four months, causing numerous small tanks to dry up completely and creating difficulties for both people and animals.

Around 30 acres of paddy cultivation in Rotawewa, Mihintale, have reportedly been destroyed due to the lack of water.

The nearby Rotawewa, Dunwattegama and Ihalagama tanks have also dried up, forcing residents of Wellankulama in Mihintale to rely on groundwater for their daily needs.

The drought has also taken a heavy toll on farmers in Thanamalwila, Monaragala, where tanks including Kiwul Ara and Indi Pelessa have completely dried up.

Crops including brinjals, maize, bananas, pumpkins, tomatoes and chillies have reportedly been destroyed, causing substantial losses to farmers.

Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions against the high temperatures, particularly during the hottest hours of the day.
