Namal Rajapaksa allowed home-cooked meals, three visitors a day in remand custody

The Department of Prisons said that Member of Parliament Namal Rajapaksa, who is currently in remand custody, has been permitted to receive cooked meals from home.

Prisons Media Spokesman Senaka Palletenna said the permission was granted following a request made on Rajapaksa’s behalf.

The Colombo Magistrate’s Court ordered Rajapaksa to be remanded until 18 September after he was arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) on suspicion of accepting bribes in connection with the controversial Airbus deal.

Palletenna said special security measures had been put in place in and around the ward where Rajapaksa is being held at the Colombo Remand Prison.

He added that up to three people would be allowed to visit Rajapaksa each day.

Meanwhile, Rajapaksa’s mother, Shiranthi Rajapaksa, visited Welikada Prison on Monday (7) to inquire about his well-being, according to Ada Derana.

Member of Parliament Rohitha Abeygunawardena also visited Welikada Prison on Monday morning to see Rajapaksa, who serves as National Organiser of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP).

Separately, an appeal filed by Yoshitha Rajapaksa, a son of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, seeking an order preventing the continuation of a conspiracy charge against him in a case filed under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, was withdrawn before the Supreme Court on Monday (7).

The Supreme Court permitted the appeal to be withdrawn while allowing Yoshitha Rajapaksa to raise the same issue if he files an appeal in the future, Ada Derana reported.
