In a move that shocked the nation, President Maithripala Sirisena appointed his bete-noire, Mahinda Rajapaksa as the new Prime Minister.  Here, Rajapaksa is seen soon after the appointment, being congratulated by his supporters.
Civil society was out on the streets on Tuesday as were UNP supporters to protest the events that took place over the weekend.  Of concern to many is the three-week long prorogation of Parliament, apparently as a ruse by the President and the Prime Minister to lure more Parliamentarians to their side.
