The Attorney General today informed the Court of Appeal that the CID is conducting investigations against Pastor Jerome Fernando under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, apart from the charges levelled under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights Act and Penal Code.

Senior State Counsel Shaminda Wickrema made these remarks when the writ petition filed by Pastor Gerome came before the Court of Appeal.

The court was informed that the CID has already commenced investigations against Pastor Jerome for insulting other religions and for the alleged commission of offences under Section 291B of the Penal Code and Section 3 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) Act of 2007.

Pastor Jerome Fernando had filed a writ petition in the Court of Appeal seeking an order preventing police from arresting him in connection with the controversial Sunday sermon.
Meanwhile, President’s Counsel Sanjeeva Jayawardena, appearing for Intervenient Petitioner Ven. Elle Gunawansa Thero, raised objections against the writ petition filed by Pastor Jerome Fernando for suppression of material facts. Jayawardena alleged that the petitioner has concealed the facts relating to the Fundamental Rights petition filed before the Supreme Court against his imminent arrest by police.

This petition is to be taken up for support again on June 21.
