President to launch Rs. 7.15 billion hospital development projects

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake will lay foundation stones on 16 September for four hospital development projects worth Rs. 7.148 billion in the Northern, North Central and Eastern Provinces.

The projects, supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency and the Government of India, include two cardiac treatment complexes and two other specialised hospital facilities.

An eight-storey cardiac complex costing Rs. 3.545 billion will be built at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital, while a similar facility costing Rs. 2.403 billion will be constructed at the Trincomalee District General Hospital.

Both projects will receive JICA loan assistance and include coronary and critical care units, catheterisation laboratories, wards, clinics, laboratories and diagnostic facilities.

The Government of India will provide Rs. 1.2 billion in grant assistance for two other projects: a Rs. 600 million accident and emergency treatment complex at the Mannar District General Hospital and a Rs. 600 million four-storey ward complex at the Mullaitivu District General Hospital.

The Government said the projects were intended to expand access to specialised cardiac, emergency and inpatient care outside Colombo and strengthen public health services in the three provinces.
