Rumesh Pathirage wins Commonwealth Games javelin gold for Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage won the men’s javelin throw gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, producing a throw of 89.75 metres.

The 23-year-old recorded the winning distance with his second attempt at Scotstoun Stadium early on Saturday, Sri Lankan time.

India’s Neeraj Chopra, the Tokyo Olympic champion, claimed silver with a throw of 85.83 metres, while compatriot Yashvir Singh secured bronze with 85.41 metres. ([The Guardian][1])

Pathirage’s victory gave Sri Lanka its sixth Commonwealth Games gold medal and its first since weightlifter Chinthana Vidanage won at the 2006 Games.

He also became the first Sri Lankan to win a Commonwealth Games athletics gold medal since Duncan White triumphed in the men’s 440-yard hurdles at the 1950 Games in Auckland.

The gold increased Sri Lanka’s medal tally at the Glasgow Games to two.

Para-athlete Palitha Bandara had earlier won silver in the men’s discus throw F42-44/F61-64 event.
