Seven injured in gas cylinder explosion at Polonnaruwa kidney hospital

Seven people were injured following an explosion at the kidney hospital in Polonnaruwa early Saturday (26) morning, police said.

The explosion occurred at around 4 a.m. after a gas cylinder exploded in the hospital kitchen. 

Those injured were members of the kitchen staff and were admitted to Polonnaruwa Hospital for treatment. Hospital sources said three of them were in serious condition.

The blast also caused extensive damage to the hospital building.

No patients receiving treatment at the kidney hospital or other health workers were injured in the explosion.

Following the incident, hospital staff safely evacuated patients from the building early in the morning.

Arrangements were made to provide them with necessary treatment and to transfer those requiring further care to Polonnaruwa General Hospital.
