The Supreme Court has determined that several clauses in the Colombo Port City Economic Commission Bill are inconsistent with the provisions of the Constitution.

The Bench headed by the Chief justice has further said that some provisions in the bill need to be passed by a special majority in Parliament and by the people at a referendum, in terms of the Constitution.

However, the Supreme Court has proposed a way out for the government to amend those clauses accordingly so that such inconsistencies will cease. The Court has also added a clause to the existing bill that will then become consistent with articles 3 &4 of the constitution. Those provisions deal with the sovereignty of the people.

The authorities, however, have decided to debate the bill tomorrow and the day after. A special session of the Cabinet too will take place this evening.
