Sri Lanka aims for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050

Sri Lanka aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 while expanding renewable energy and green production to strengthen its competitiveness in global markets, Deputy Minister of Environment Anton Jayakody said on Friday.

Jayakody said Sri Lanka already generated as much as 80 percent of its electricity from renewable sources during some months with favorable rainfall.

He said environmentally sustainable production would become increasingly important for market access and competitiveness in the global economy by 2035.

The emissions generated by individual factories, the extent to which they adopt greener production methods and their carbon-credit performance would increasingly affect their position in international markets, Jayakody said.
