Sri Lanka calls for fairer global financial system, stronger voice for developing countries

Sri Lanka has called for greater representation of developing countries in global institutions and reforms to create a fairer international financial system.

Deputy Foreign Affairs and Foreign Employment Minister Arun Hemachandra made the call while addressing a high-level meeting in Belgrade marking the 65th anniversary of the first summit of the Non-Aligned Movement.

He said developing countries needed a stronger collective voice as they dealt with conflicts, humanitarian emergencies, natural disasters and economic crises.

Hemachandra also reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s commitment to an independent foreign policy based on sovereignty, multilateralism and peaceful coexistence, saying the country sought constructive relations with all states.

He reiterated Sri Lanka’s support for a just and lasting settlement of the Palestinian question in accordance with international law and relevant UN resolutions.
