Sri Lanka has provided high-speed fiber internet connections to 2,345 government secondary schools and plans to extend the service to all 3,832 primary schools in 2027 and 2028, the Department of Government Information (DGI) said on Tuesday.
The program, jointly implemented by the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka and the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education, aims to connect 6,225 secondary schools across the country.
The government has allocated 150 million Sri Lankan rupees (about 496,000 U.S. dollars) in the 2026 budget to provide schools with unlimited internet packages.
The next phase will cover all 3,832 primary schools, with the government aiming to eventually provide high-speed internet access to every school in Sri Lanka.
Officials said the initiative is intended to support digital education and improve access to information technology for students in both rural and urban areas.
