Sri Lanka to issue green number plates for electric vehicles

Sri Lanka will issue specially designed green-background number plates for all electric vehicles from now on, the Department of Motor Traffic said on Monday.

Commissioner General of Motor Traffic Thushara Indunil Fernando said white and yellow plates would continue to be issued for other vehicles.

A pilot project for green number plates were conducted recently, he said. 

However, existing EVs with standard plates are not mandated to swap them with new green ones, he said.

He asked relevant vehicle owners to collect their number plates from the Department of Motor Traffic office in Narahenpita, Colombo.
