Sri Lanka plans to recruit 23,000 graduate teachers in December to help fill vacancies in national and provincial schools, Prime Minister and Education Minister Harini Amarasuriya said.

The Ministry of Education said results of the competitive examinations for graduate teacher recruitment would be released before the end of September, with interviews expected to take place in October.

Of the 23,000 recruits, 15,000 will be selected through an examination for graduates already employed in the public sector, while 8,000 will be recruited through an open competitive examination.

The Ministry also plans to recruit 6,500 National Colleges of Education diploma holders in February next year.

The new teachers will be assigned to national and provincial schools where vacancies currently exist.

Amarasuriya has also instructed university vice-chancellors to take immediate steps to fill approved vacancies in state universities.

She further stressed that investigations into ragging should be conducted in a manner that gives affected students confidence in the process, adding that university administrations bear an ethical responsibility to prevent ragging.
