Sri Lanka to recruit graduates to fill more than 6,000 teacher vacancies

Sri Lanka will recruit graduates to fill more than 6,000 vacancies in national and provincial schools, Deputy Minister of Education and Higher Education, Dr. Madhura Senevirathna told Parliament on Thursday.

The approved vacancies include 105 teaching posts in national schools and 6,021 posts in provincial schools.

The Government has already called for applications from public-sector graduates to fill Sinhala-, Tamil- and English-medium teaching vacancies. Authorities conducted the relevant competitive examination in May 2026.

The Government plans to complete the recruitment of qualified graduates to the Teachers’ Service during this year in accordance with the relevant Gazette notification.

It will also begin recruiting diploma holders from National Colleges of Education from July.

Students from the 2024 National College of Education intake are expected to complete their diplomas later, allowing the Government to recruit them to Grade 3-I of the Teachers’ Service during the first quarter of 2027.

The recruits will be assigned to existing vacancies in national and provincial schools.
